The year is 129 AC, King Viserys I Targaryen still sits on the throne though he grows weaker every day through both age and illness. In recent years, the ruling of the realm has largely fallen to Viserys’ second wife and current Queen, Alicent Hightower, and her father, Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King.
Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, is believed to be dying from wounds suffered in the Stepstones. A cloud hangs over the succession of Driftmark, as Corlys’ younger brother, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, challenges the legitimacy of Corlys’ chosen heir, Prince Lucerys Velaryon. Vaemond believes he should inherit his brother’s lands and titles and his calls for a petition have been answered and are to be heard in the coming week at Court in King’s Landing to settle the matter once and for all.
Darker clouds gather over the realm as a whole. Viserys is not long for the grave, and his named heir, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen may not find her ascension to the throne to be an easy one. Many in the court look to the King’s first born son by Queen Alicent, Rhaenyra’s younger half-brother, Prince Aegon, as the true heir to the Iron Throne.
