Following the Great Council of 233 AC, King Aegon of the House Targaryen, fifth of his name, sits the Iron Throne. He struggles to maintain power and influence, having created several edicts that give powers and protections to the realm’s smallfolk. This has created derision between Aegon and many of his powerful, influential vassals.
Aegon’s children have exacerbated this tension. His third son, Prince Jaehaerys, and eldest daughter, Shaera, were betrothed to the daughter of Lord Tully and the heir to Lord Tyrell respectively, but broke these vows in order to marry one another. Lord Tully has been gravely insulted, while Lord Lorent Tyrell is so disparaged, he contemplates exchanging his loyalties from the red dragon to the black.
In the east, Daemon III Blackfyre and Ser Aegor Rivers have licked their wounds following the failure of the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion, and resolve to take advantage of the growing instability of Aegon V’s reign in a bid to invade the Seven Kingdoms once more, and seize the Iron Throne for themselves.
