In the autumn of Jieli Year 19, a shocking announcement was made by the central palace.
It declared that the Mingwu Emperor would abdicate his throne and step down from the highest position to make way for a new monarch. It denounced the abilities of the living princes to inherit the realm and read that the Princess Guizhen was honorable, dignified, and of great moral character. She was suited to sit the throne and govern the state.
In the wake of the news, chaos ensued. Hundreds of officials opposed the appointment, jointly making a petition for the Mingwu Emperor to reconsider. But the emperor did not listen and ordered violent demonstrations that would keep the officials in line in order to push his beloved daughter on to the throne.
