The year is 300 AC, around 20 years back Robert and his allies raised their banners against the mad king Aerys Targaryen. The war of the usurper was going well for the rebels until Robert's forces met with Rhaegar at the Trident, where Rhaegar killed Robert and defeated his forces in battle. Shocked by the death of Robert Baratheon, Jon Arryn, and the young Ned Stark lost hope for the war. Stannis became the lord of the Stormlands and surrendered to Rhaegar. Rhaegar undermined his father and pardoned Jon Arryn and Ned Stark to not cause any problems in the realm. After a few years, Rhaegar Targaryen and Ser Jaime Lannister plotted and succeeded in killing the Mad King Aerys and installing Rhaegar onto the Iron Throne. Years later, Rhaegar arranged marriages between his children with the Starks, Tullys, and Arryns to keep them in line and loyal.
